Founded in 1998 by Alvaro Cunha, the Gramma Institute of Linguistics was established to promote the study of classical languages and advance linguistic research.

Over the years, its activities have expanded to include training in descriptive linguistics, the documentation of minority languages, and the development of educational and scholarly materials.
